Nutrient of the week.. Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha lipoic acid is almost as important as glutathione is to our cells. It is brilliant at protecting us from oxidative stress, meaning that it helps mop up our free radicals; an antioxidant, and a powerful one. Unlike other antioxidants such as vitamin C and E, it is possible for alpha lipoic acid to act in the body in both water and fat tissues, however when these are all taken together their ability to fight free radical damage is greatly increased.

It has been shown to be great for blood pressure, insulin resistance and blood sugar problems, heavy metal poisoning, weight loss and migraines and works with B vitamins in the production of energy.

I use it a lot in clinic to help people who are trying to reduce their toxic load and detoxify, or for those who are not in a position to detox, to help their bodies cope with the stress they are under, whatever that may be!

Alpha lipoic acid is found in foods like yeast, liver, spinach, broccoli and potatoes. However our bodies produce less as we get older and considering the amount of toxins we are up against supplementation is often a good idea!
