I love maca and it loves me! I honestly feel my energy flow all day when I add maca to my smoothie in the morning.
Maca is a Peruvian root vegetable that grows 10,000 feet above sea level and makes it the highest growing crop in the world! It looks a bit like a cross between a parsnip and a turnip, it is usually in powdered form by the time we get it.
Maca is what we call an adaptogen and this is a food product that helps to keep the body in balance, so if our hormones are out maca could help to bring them back into line and if our immune system is suffering it will help get it back on track, if we are stressed adaptogens help our body to cope etc.
There has been research into the benefits of maca and it is thought to help with many things, especially energy levels and low libidos. It is heralded as an aphrodisiac in Peru! And is also thought to be great for postmenopausal symptoms which can include anxiety and depression.
It is packed full of lovliness including calcium, magnesium, managanese, copper, selenium, iodine, zinc, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, sodium, iron and B vitamins and C and E. It also has a good amount of fibre and protein for a root veg!
I recommend it a lot in clinic and find it is easiest to add to a juice or a smoothie, but you can sprinkle it onto your cereal as it has a lovely malty taste.
I would recommend adding a tablespoon to your daily diet and see if your energy is more sustained throughout the day!
I will add a maca smoothie recipe to the blog very soon, I promise.
